Triacylglycerols contain more metabolic energy gram per gram than glycogen because triacylglycerols *

A contain more heteroatoms like nitrogen which facilitates amino acid synthesis

B triacylglycerols are synthesized in the body, while glycogen is consumed

C contain more water by volume, providing an aqueous environment for metabolic processes to occur

D are more reduced, and thus can reap the maximum energy upon complete oxidation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The correct answer is D. Triglycerides are made up of a glycerol backbone and three fatty acids attached to each of the three carbon atoms. These fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated but in either case, they are reduced. Glucose molecule or the polymer ( such as glycogen) are less reduced form thus fat is the stored form of the energy and releases a much greater amount of energy upon various oxidation reactions in the cell. Fatty acids chain make it more reduced form.
