Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) the conclusion we would draw here is that in aerobic conditions it oxidises glucose while in anaerobic conditions it ferments peptones and are unable to ferment glucose.

b) example of such a bacteria : pseudomonas aeruginosa

principle: the tubes contain bromophenol blue (pH indicator) in addition to the growth media. One tube is open while the other is covered with mineral oil. The former provides aerobic growth conditions while the latter provides anaerobic ones. So, whenever the bacteria oxidises glucose and produces acids, the solution turns from green to yellow. No conversion of colour suggests inability of the bacteria to utilise (oxidise in case of aerobic and ferment in case of anaerobic) glucose.
