What can we say about the influence of genes versus the environment on traits?
Influence of genes on traits:
Interaction between the genes obtained from each parent influences the expression of trait. Dominant genes are expressed always, but recessive genes are expressed when there are 2 copies. Partial dominance or codominance is also possible.
Influence of environment on traits:
The environment in which an organism lives also influences expression of genes. Drugs, temperature, light, chemicals etc influence expression of genes. E.g.. We would have been taller if there was half the earth's gravity. Environmental variables can change the function of encoded proteins or switch the genes on or off.
Organisms with same genes can have different traits. All traits depend on both genetic and environmental factors.
