Rubisco is the most abundant enzyme on earth. What is its function and what is the effect of competitive inhibition by oxygen? Why do you think rubisco hassuch low specificity between its preferred substrate (CO2) and its competitive inhibitor? (Consider earth’s early atmosphere). What effect do you think combustion of fossil fuels and increasing carbon dioxide levels will have?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Rubisco is the Enzyme which catalyse the reaction between CO2 AND Ribulose bisphosphate. This is the most abundant Enzyme on earth.RubisCO show both carboxylase and Oxygenase activity. In high concentration of oxygen it can bind with oxygen and give some low efficient products. Rubisco has such low affinity for its substrate because it have capacity to bind with O2 and CO2 but binding with CO2 is occur due to absence of O2 . This is due to atmospheric change of gases concentration. The increase in CO2 LEVEL has negative effects. This is due to the environment distrubance. The Respiration process decrease due to decrease in O2 and increase in CO2. So Rubisco activity also decreases as food breakdown decrease so it's formation also decreases.

Approximately 80% of infrared (IR) radiation emitted by Earth is trapped by greenhouse gases, causing the warming of Earth\'s atmosphere known as the greenhouse effect. Even though nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2) make up the majority of the atmosphere (~99%), they do not contribute to the greenhouse effect. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major contributor. Why does CO2 contribute to the greenhouse effect, while N2 and O2 do not? CO2 absorbs ultraviolet radiation escaping from the Earth\'s surface, creating...
