A prolonged PTT may be due to low levels of clotting factors,
such as: Liver disease- most coagulation factors are produced by
the liver, thus liver disease may cause prolonged PT and PTT.
However, PT is more likely to be prolonged than PTT.
Low platelet: Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and rheumatoid
arthritis, cause this type. The body's immune system mistakenly
attacks and destroys platelets. this condition is also called as
idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
Dysfibrinogenemia is a condition in which fibrinogen levels are
normal, but the protein doesn't function properly.
Dysfibrinogenemia affects only about one in every 1 million people.
The condition rarely causes a bleeding problem and instead is more
likely to cause thrombosis.
