In fungal cells, what would happen if a chaperone protein was inadvertently transported out of the endoplasmic reticulum?
Endoplasmic reticulum is a double membrane bound organelle exclusively found in eukaryotes. It is the site of protein folding in these organisms. Protein folding occur with the help of special protein called as chaperones.
If a chaperone is transported out of the endoplasmic reticulum, then the proteins which will enter endoplasmic reticulum for their folding will not be folded. In this way, final three dimensional structure of proteins will not be formed. In the absence of these proteins, there will be no proteinaceous enzyme which will be able to catalyse metabolic reactions inside a fungal cell and therefore the fungal cell will die.
