Question: Fill in the blanks.
DNA replication errors may occur in the ________ (do not abbreviate) subphase of interphase. Such errors may be detected at the ________ checkpoint, and if severe enough, could result in ________ of the cell.
Synthesis, G2/M checkpoint, death
DNA replication errors are the spontaneous mutations which arise during the replication of DNA. DNA is replicated during synthesis phase of cell cycle. It takes place inside nucleus in eukaryotes.
If there is any mutation in the replicated DNA, then it is checked at G2/M checkpoint. If the mutation can be repaired, then DNA repair system comes into play for the correction of these mutations. At this stage the cell cycle is arrested. But if it cannot be corrected, then the cell is made to die by apoptosis. Apoptosis is a series of reactions which occur one after the other and results in the death of the cell which is no longer useful to the organism.
In case the checkpoint does not work well and the cell with damaged DNA is replicated, then it results in the formation of cancer in the organism.
