a.) What are the major morphological differences between the RER and the SER?
b.) What are the major differences in their functions?
SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM:-
(1)Smooth ER appears contain interlocking tubular sheets having different functions.
(2)Its location is near cell membrane.
(3)They originate from rough endoplasmic reticulum by removal of ribosomes.Hence, they do not possess ribosomes.
ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM :-
(1)Rough ER has inwards double folding of cell membranes which have ribosomes attached. They appear as parallel sheets of membrane called cisternae.
(2)It's location is near cytoplasm.
(3)It's origin is nuclear membrane.
(4)It possess ribosomes.
Functional differences:-
Smooth endoplasmic Reticulum is involved in production and export of lipids and protein and detoxification, while Rough endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for secretion and export of protein and some hormones.
