Answer #1

A method of generating metastatic tumor cells in vitro comprising:

(a) introducing one or more tumor cells into a bioreactor;

(b) providing to the bioreactor fluid culture media and gas composition supportive of growth of the tumor cells;

(c) incubating the bioreactor under conditions and for a time sufficient for the tumor cells to produce metastatic cells;

(d) collecting metastatic tumor cells

   A combination of a bioreactor and one or more tumor cells in which the system parameters are such that the tumor cells maintain their normal metastatic potential.

The invention further provides mechanism for inducing tumors to undergo metastatic processes resulting in production of tumor progenitor or stem cells that can be collected, characterized, or used to induce tumors in normal tissue constructs in vitro

You provide cells in culture with 32P and treat them with insulin for 30 minutes. Following the treatment, you homogenize the cells and isolate the insulin receptors. The control cells received 32P, but no insulin. Insulin receptors from the insulin-treated cells were radiolabeled with 32P; the controls were not. Why?

The MN blood group is another blood group found on human red blood cells. There are only two alleles, M and N, which are codominant. In a population of humans there are 80 individuals that are MM, 150 MN, and 270 NN. Using the allele counting method, determine the allele frequencies for M and N.

You are studying a tumor suppressor gene in the cells from a biopsy of a cancer patient and find that these cells lack the activity of the protein encoded by this gene. You proceed to sequence the genome of these cancer cells. To your initial surprise you find that the sequence of the genes encoding this tumor suppressor and all of the genes involved in its transcriptional regulation are undamaged. What could be going on?
