What is your hypothesis based on your research on the Laminin-like gene that you are investigating (where will you see your gene expressed in the organism when performing the WISH)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Laminins are basically proteins found in various parts of the body and also in foods. They act by binding to the membranes in the cells of our body. They perform functions like adhesion, cell signaling, etc. Laminin gene is expressed during embryogenesis notably blastocyst stage; Studies show that Laminin is expressed in skin, lungs, heart and reproductive tracts. When performing WISH they are expressed in RNAs in the embryos. They are found to be expressed in the muscle tissues in the embryos; in the skin in the ectoderm and the endoderm;

Suppose your research team found a brand new gene that may be involved in the early stages of embryonic development. In studying this gene, your team manages to identify the promoter region and one enhancer region that is 1,000 kilobases upstream of the promoter region. To study this gene’s expression during embryonic development, would you choose to fuse a reporter gene, like GFP, with the promoter region or the enhancer of your gene of interest? Why would you choose that...

You are screening newborns to see if they have the progerin gene mutation or not.  Describe how you would use FISH as a diagnostic toolfor this disease. What technique could you use to see if the progerin protein or normal Lamin A protein was being expressed.  For both, explain the technique and how you would determine which protein the patient expressed (the normal or progerin). Everything you need to know about the progerin gene and protein is in the Human Connections section....

While investigating a gene that might be responsible for pathogen resistance in the plant Arabidopsis, you discover that many of the nucleotides in the gene sequence are methylated. (b) Draw the structure of this methylated nucleotide. Be sure to include all atoms and the necessary bonds to each atom of the phosphate, the sugar and the base in its methylated form. (c) What might this methylation do to the function of this gene?
