The law states that two characters are inherited independently.

Characters exist together in an individual but the assort independently during gamete formation.

the principle, originated by Gregor Mendel, stating that when two or more characteristics are inherited, individual hereditary factors assort independently during gamete production, giving different traits an equal opportunity of occurring together.

During crossing over in meosis during chaismata formation the sister chromatids exchange their DNA segments.

Due to this we can say that Mendel's law of independent assortment holds true.
