If an unknown organism grew on EMB and caused a color change, would you expect no growth or growth and a color change/no color change if you inoculated the same organism on MacConkey agar? Why?
EMB are used to detect gram negetive bacteria. Most bacteria that ferment lactose form colonies on EMB agar that are blue black with metallic sheen due to precpitation of dyes by acid by products.
Rapid lactose fermenting colonies of E. coli appear dry, donut shaped and dark pink in color and are surrounded with dark pink area of precipitated bile salts. For non fermenting bacteria the colonies would be colorless.
Hence , we would expect a color change and growth if you inoculated the same organism on MacConkey agar.
