A friend is pregnant with twins that she knows are fraternal. What are the chances that at least one of the babies is a girl?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Fraternal Twins occurs when 2 ova are fertilized by two different sperms and these different ova are incubated in the uterus to form babies. The chances of fraternal twins resulting in both boys, both girls or combination of both are same for as for any other babies.Sex of baby is determined by Male chromosomes X and Y as the female has X and X chromosomes.IF fertilization results in XY chromosome then boy is born and if XX forms, a girl is born.

Mathematically, Total no. of possible events-Both boys, Both Girls, Combination of both =3

The favorable event that is at least a girl=2 ( both girls or a girl in combination)

The probability of at least one girl = Favourable Events/Total no. of events= 2/3=.6666 or 66.66%

Therefore, there are 66.66 % chances of at least one baby born as a girl.
