Question

Describe how genome sequencing can be used to reduce the spread of an infection.

Describe how genome sequencing can be used to reduce the spread of an infection.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Whole genome sequencing, determining the organism's entire DNA sequence in real time. this technology helps us to implement rapid-response infection control protocols.

for example, during an outbreak, researchers will conduct a screening for all persons by collecting samples from an infected person and surrounding area related to him like sinks, soap dispensers etc. after whole genome sequencing they able to find out which person is infected and which is not. then they isolate the persons from rest of the unaffected persons so the disease will not spread and start treating the patients with proper treatments.

You are purifying bacterial chromosomal DNA to send off for genome sequencing. The estimated genome size of your organism is 4 Mbp and you know that the average MW of a base pair is 660 Daltons. You have isolated 1 microg of genomic DNA, how many moles of DNA are in your sample? If you resuspended the chromosomal DNA in 50 microL, what would be the final concentration of the DNA?
