Some of the antibody tests for COVID 19 distinguish between IgM and IgG. What do you think is the medical significance of that? (at least 3 sentences).
When an antigen is first encountered (primary response) by the body, the body produces antibodies against it. For the first encounter, IgM is produced, or more IgM are produced than any other antibodies. When the body encounters the same antigen again ( secondary response), the body synthesizes more of IgG than IgM. IgM is the first antibody produced against the virus infection.
So, while testing we observe a person with more of IgM antibodies, we can conclude that person is infected with COVID19. But when testing another person and we observe that more of IgG than IgM, we can conclude that the person has recovered from the same infection. IgG remains in the blood even after infection.
