What is the purpose of the cristae in the mitochondria and what structure provides the same role in the chloroplast?
The chloroplast has two membrane one is outer and another is inner membrane.
Cristae is the inner membrane of MITOCHONDRIA and which is responsible for the transport of electrons from NADH or FADH 2 to oxygen and makes water and ATP which is the energy currency of the cell. The complex of ELECTRONS TRANSPORT chain is present surface area wise of inner membrane.
Cristae increases the surface are of the inner membrane by making invagination and thus ETC complexes and more ATP WILL BE PRODUCED and effiency of ATP production will be more.
If cristae is not present ,then ATP production can't make the needs of the cells.
Thylakoid membrane also playd same role in chloroplast in photosynthesis by increasing the surface are of the inner membrane of chloroplast.
