What can organic wastes be converted to except for fertilizers?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Organic waste majorly contains those waste materials which are biodegradable in nature. The major use of organic waste is to generate fertilizers for use in farms and nurseries, but other uses are also possible as enlisted below:

  1. Compost can be prepared from the organic waste for commercial and domestic use
  2. Bio-gas can be generated using this organic waste
  3. Bio-refineries can utilize these organic wastes as reactants as well as substrates for refining oils and other organic liquids
  4. Some organic wastes such as coconut shells can be used for decorative purpose

Thus, this explains some of the commonly carried out uses of organic waste except fertilizers.

The amount of nitrogen in an organic substance can be determined by an analytical method called the Kjeldahl method, in which all the nitrogen in the organic substance is converted to ammonia. The ammonia, which is a weak base, can be neutralized with hydrochloric acid, as described by the equation: NH3 (aq)+ HCl (aq) ---> NH4Cl (aq). If 86.0 mL of 0.150 M HCl(aq) is needed to neutralize all the NH3(g) from a 2.25-g sample of organic material, calculate the...

We did an experiment in my organic chemistry lab. We converted maleic acid into a fumaric acid via an acid catalyzed, HCl, cis-trans alkene isomerization reaction. One of the post lab questions was: Fumaric acid is much less soluble in water than maleic acid. Could this be a driving force for the isomerization? Explain using LeChatelier’s principle.
