What evidence did Sperry find that supports his chemoaffinity hypothesis? Have Sperry’s proposed “recognition molecules” been found?

Answer #1

The chemoaffinity hypothesis states that neurons makes connections with their targets based on interactions with specific molecular markers. The markers are generated during cellular differentiation and aid not only synaptogenisis but also acts as guidance cues for their respective axons.

Roger wolcott perry pioneered the inception of the chemoaffinity hypothesis followed by experiments on African clawed frog where he removed its eye and rotated it to 180degrees. Sperry then replaced the eye and the visual nervous system repaired itself. However the frog has inverted vision. When the food source was placed down front then the frog placed its tounge upwards. Sperry proposed that different cells bear distinct cell surface proteins that serve as markers. There is now extensive data that supports the chemoagffinity hypothesis but some aspects are unproven.

Molecules of oxygen gas have been very difficult to find in space. Recently, the European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory has found molecular oxygen in the Orion star-forming complex. It is present at very low concentrations, 1 molecule of oxygen per every million molecules of hydrogen, but it does exist. How many molecules of oxygen would exist in a 3.0 gram sample of hydrogen gas? (Enter your answer in scientific notation, i.e., 1.00E+10)

A hypothesis test is completed and we have sufficient evidence that a certain population mean is more than 200. Suppose that in reality, the population mean is 200. Determine if a correct decision has been made. If an error has been made, indicate which type of error it is. The decision was incorrect; a Type II error has been committed. A new design for the braking system for a car has been proposed. For the current braking system, the true average braking distance at 40 mph under specified condition is known to be 120 ft. It is proposed that the new braking system design will not be implemented if evidence from sample data indicates that the braking distance is HIGHER (compared to the current system). Let µ denote the true average braking distance. State an appropriate hypothesis test that would...

Assume you have a container with 100 ideal gas molecules. (a) What is the probability that zero molecules will be found in a small volume corresponding 1% of the container’s total volume. (b) How many molecules will you need for the probability to be 1 in 1000 (or 0.001) for the same volume inside the container?
