One GTP is hydrolyzed when EF-Tu dissociates from the ribosome after the correct codon/anticodon base pairing occurs between the codon and tRNA in the A site.

One GTP (carried by EF-G) is hydrolyzed during translocation.

Hydrolysis of the two GTP molecules is coupled to maintaining the order of the events of elongation and the specificity of that event (for EF-Tu).
