In Angus cattle, Black hide (B) is dominant to Red hide (b). In a large randomly mating herd of 500 cattle, 200 are black and 300 are red. What are the genotypic and gene frequencies in this population? Assume H-W.

Answer #1

I believe the correct answer to be:

Genotypic frequency of bb = 300/500 = 0.6.
allele frequency of b = underroot of 0.6 = 0.775.

Since the population is in HWE, total sum of allelic frequency = 1.

So allele frequency of B = 1-0.775 = 0.225.
Genotypic frequency of BB= B2= 0.2252= 0.051.

And the frequency of Bb genotype = 2xBxb = 2x0.775x0.051= 0.078

The genotypes of a population of 500 cattle were tested. These analyses showed that Red short-horned cattle are homozygous for the red allele (R), White cattle are homozygous for the white allele (W), and roan cattle are heterozygotes (RW). 36% of the cattle are red, 16% are white, and 48% are roan cattle. What are the frequencies for the R and W alleles?

1a. A large artificial insemination stud has just purchased a promising Red Angus bull. Management is concerned, however, that the bull might be a carrier of osteopetrosis (marble bone disease), a recessive lethal condition. Assume that there is no DNA test for the recessive allele. Five percent of all cows are thought to be carriers of the osteopetrosis allele. A.I. matings to randomly selected cows have already produced 87 normal calves and no osteopetrosis calves. What is management's level of...

You are studying two isolated populations of birds living on two different islands. In particular, you are interested in studying two different traits in these birds: beak size and feather color. Beak size is determined by a single gene exhibiting incomplete dominance. Birds with 2 copies of the A allele (genotype AA) have large beaks, birds with 1 copy of the A allele (genotype Aa) have medium beaks, and birds with no copies of the A allele (genotype aa) have...
