Using a 1:1 dilution scheme, how many dilutions would you need to do to prepare a 62.5 mM solution from a stock solution of 1 M?

  • Concentration of stock = 1M = 1000 mM (Conversion factor** 1M = 1000mM)
  • Final required concentration =62.5 mM
  • Dilution factor = Stock concentration / Final Concentration = 1000/62.5 = 16 fold
  • Serial Dilution scheme (1:1), with each dilution the concentration will decrease by a factor of 2
  • Therefore number of steps or dilutions required (n) can be determined as: 2n = 16
  • 2n = 24, therefore n = 4
  • So after 4 serial (1:1) dilutions, the concentration of the final solution will be 62.5mM
