Which functional group links together fatty acids into a triglyceride?

a) Alkenes

b) Hemiacetals

c) Amides

d) Esters

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Triglyceride is made up of one glycerol and three fatty acid molecules. Each fatty acid molecule is linked to glycerol via an ester bond. Triglyceride is also called tri-ester molecule. In triglyceride, the -OH (hydroxyl) group of glycerol forms ester bond with the -COOH (carboxyl) group of each fatty acid. Hence triglyceride has three fatty acid molecules linked to one glycerol with ester bond. So option d is the correct answer.

See the attached image for the formation of triglyceride from glycerol and three fatty acids.
