Describe the types of interactions that occur between species and explain how both intra and interspecific competition can influence populations.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The interaction occurs between species are categories into two parts

  1. Interspecific interaction: It is an interaction of different species in a community. Eg Competition between lion and tiger for the same prey. It is further divided into the competition (-/-), predation (+/-), mutualism, (+/+), commensalism (+/0), and parasitism (+/-).
  2. Intraspecific interaction: In this interaction, the same species fight for limited resources. It is based on survival of the fittest. Eg Monkey fighting for Banana.

Interspecific competition can be eliminating for the species population, as the resources will decrease it will affect population asymmetrically and it will eliminate one species from that particular community. Meanwhile in Intraspecific, it is all about survival of the fittest and it slows does the population growth with increase in intense competition.

Northwestern Alaska is home to a variety of species. Some of these species and their interactions with one another are described here. Beavers (Castor canadensis, pictured on the left) eat willow shrubs; they also use willow as a source of material for building dams. Damming of waterways causes water to pool, which creates habitats that salmon use as spawning locations. Moose eat the same willow shrubs that beavers use to build their dams. The ptarmigan (pictured on the right) is...
