Fish species that formed as a result of the closure of the Isthmus of Panama are an example of: Select one: a. The “dumbbell” (AKA vicariance) model of allopatric speciation b. The peripheral isolate model of allopatric speciation c. Sympatric speciation d. Parapatric speciation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Dumbell model of allopatric speciation is a model of speciation where a population is separated in to two becaue of the formation of a mountain, water body or loss of a bridge all of which prevent the gene flow. This results in the two populations evolving separately and giving rise to two different species. So the fish species formed after the closure of panama are an example of dumbell shaped model of allopatric speciation.

Peripheral isolate model is when a peripheral population separates and forms a species.

Sympatric speciation is when new species forms with in the same population.

Paapatric speciation occurs while the populations are having gene flow.

Option 'a' is hte right one.

Over 20 species of fish have descended from a single common ancestral species. Fossil evidence shows that each of these species evolved when fluctuating water levels totally isolated small sub-populations of the original ancestral species into several different small lakes and prevented interbreeding. Today they are all completely sympatric (all live in the same large lake.) We can identify them all accurately by their morphology. With this evidence, how best can we hypothesize what type of speciation was involved ?...

Imagine a species of grass carp (a freshwater fish) that inhabits a pond in mid Missouri along with many other fish and invertebrate organisms. The carp routinely increases the turbidity (reduces the clarity) of the water by sweeping its fin through the silt. This behaviors has no effect on the carp itself, but significantly reduces the ability for other species to find food. Between the grass carp and the other species, this is likely an example pf which type of...

Many cold water fish species do not survive in warmer water. Some scientists hypothesize that the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water (which fish breathe) is responsible. The model describing the amount of oxygen dissolved in water is Henry’s Law. Henry’s Law constants are temperature dependent; a model for how Henry’s Law constants (for oxygen dissolved in water) change with temperature is: KH(T)=(0.0013 Mol/kJ*bar) x (e1700 K(1/T -1/298/15K)) (from https://webbook.nist.gov/cgi/cbook.cgi?ID=C7782447&Mask=10#Solubility). To test this hypothesis, we can calculate the concentration...
