Is the majority of the fungal mass haploid or diploid explain? b. What might be an advantage to the haploid condition over the diploid condition? What is a disadvantage?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Most of the fungal species exhibit haplontic life cycle.
i.e. a dominant gametophytic generation and a highly reduced sporophytic generation
The gametophytic generation is represented by the mycelium.
The sporophytic generation is represented only by the zygote.

As soon as the zygote is formed, it immediately undergoes meiotic division to produce haploid spores.
i.e. Zygotic meiosis: Zygote = Meiocyte

Advantage: A single allele is sufficient to exhibit a recessive phenotype

Disadvantage: A mutation in gene often results in the appearance of mutant phenotype as there is no second copy of the gene
