How do innate immune cells recognize foreign antigen?
Each pathogen or foreign antigen contain protein or lipid molecule which are present on their surface . These molecules act as PAMP ( pathogen associated molecular pattern) which are recognised by the pathogen recognisition receptor present on the surface of the innate immune cells. After recognisation the pathogen are killed by natural killer cells or engulfed by macrophages.
Each pathogen has a specific pattern and are recognised by specific receptor. But the response by innate immune cells towards every pathogen is same .
These PAMP molecule are not present on self cell . As a result we can easily distinguished between the self and non self cell.
