The pathway of gluconeogenesis provides converts non-carbohydrate precursors into glucose. The body needs a pathway like gluconeogenesis for glucose synthesis to form glucose from pyruvate and this pathway is an important pathway which stores the needed energy for the brain in the form of glucose. This process of gluconeogenesis occurs in the liver and in the cortex of the kidneys when a person followsfasting, low-carbohydrate diet, does intense exercise or starves. The mechanism of gluconeogenesis is used by the body to maintain normal blood glucose levels.
