Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) preferentially destroys CD4+ cells. Specifically, what effect does this have on antibody and cell-mediated immunity?
Question
CD4+ cells are also known as T helper cell. These cells are attacked by the HIV virus during AIDS. The CD4+ cells when infected with the HIV virus do not signal the memory B cells to produce antibodies. Therefore B cells would not produce antibodies to fight the infection. Similarly, CD4+ cells send signals to other immune cells like CD8+, macrophages, cytotoxic T cells to get activate but when CD4+ cells are infected they will not able to send signal these cells and they will not be able to activate and more prone to infection.
