Describe what happens to ALL the end-products of glycolysis in a short paragraph (5-7 sentences). Be sure to explain how or why each post-glycolysis pathway might be used by the cell (i.e. under what conditions).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Glycolysis converts (cleaves) a glucose molecule (6 carbon) into two molecules of pyruvate (3 carbon).

Pyruvate has two dates:

  • It can be further oxidised into acetyl-CoA which, then, enters the TCA cycle to be oxidized completely into carbon dioxide.
  • It can be converted into lactate (homolactic fermentation) or ethanol (alcoholic fermentation).

TCA cycle occurs in the aerobic respiration (in the presence of oxygen), whereas fermentation happens in the anaerobic conditions.
