Aspirin is an inhibitor of the enzyme prostaglandin synthase.
How dies
aspirin reduce the inflammatory pain and cause blood
“thinning”?
Aspirin is an irreversible inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase (COX)
enzyme which is involved in the production of inflammatory
substances such as prostaglandins.
Aspirin also interferes with blood clotting. One of the downstream
molecules in blood clotting is Thromboxane A2 formed by
prostaglandins. Thromboxane A2 usually stimulates the activation of
new platelets and increases their aggregation. Inhibition of
cyclooxygenase results in decreased synthesis of thromboxane A2 and
coagulation of blood is reduced.
