At the most basic level, what are genes composed of?
Genes are considered as the hereditary vehicles in living organisms.
They are composed of Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) which consists of four types of nitrogenous bases, a phosphate group, and a five-carbon sugar molecule. The arrangement of nucleotides in the DNA is called the sequence and this arrangement represents the functionality of a gene. At the most basic level, the gene is composed of nucleotides (four types of nitrogenous bases, a phosphate group, and a five-carbon sugar molecule) arranged in a unique fashion. These genes when transcribed produce messenger RNA (mRNA) and this mRNA upon translation produce proteins.
