Why can't plants have pumps? (e.g a human pump would be the heart)
Plants don't need to have pumps like our heart because they have xylem tubes. These tubes are similar to our blood vessels. Like the heart pumps blood throughout the body and the blood distributes nutrients to the entire body, xylem carries water and nutrients throughout the plant body. For this to happen they rely on two type of physical forces that are strong than the gravitational force. when applied within the xylem. These forces are adhesion and cohesion. Cohesive forces exit between like molecules and adhesive between unlike molecules. It is by virtue of these forces that xylem can carrying water and nutrients to the topmost part fo the plant. thus, plants do not require a pump like our heart.
