Escherichia coli can ferment glucose and lactose, but not sucrose. Proteus vulgaris can ferment glucose and sucrose, but not lactose. What color would the phenol red tests be for both organisms if you tested all three sugars?

Answer #1

Inorder to test the ability of tha bacteria to ferment lactose or sucrose, we are suppose to do the carbohydrate fermentation test individually for these sugars. We cannot perform TSI here because TSI doesnt gives us specific result. We can only differentiate between glucose and lactose, sucrose in TSI.

So the best way to find is inoculating them in carbohydrate fermentation tubes with respective sugars and look for the colour change. If the sugar is fermented, the red colour of the broth changes to yellow colour. The colour change is due to the acid base indicator- phenol red. In acidic pH PR is yellow, neutral pH it is red and alkaline pH it is pink or fuschia.

Name of the organism Glucose Lactose Sucrose
E coli yellow colour yellow colour red colour or no change
P vulgarius yellow colour no change yellow colour

(colour after 24hrs of incubation)

1. The lac operon responds to lactose and glucose. If wild-type E. coli cells are grown in media that contains both lactose and glucose, they will consume the glucose first because: (select all that apply) A.) the lac repressor remains bound to lacO, preventing the lac operon from being expressed at maximal levels B.) the permease (lacY) is not expressed in the presence of glucose, preventing lactose from entering the cell and being converted to allolactose, the inducer C.) the...

Activity 1: Scientific Reports You may have heard the question “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” A similar question can be asked about experiments. “If a researcher performs an experiment and never publishes the result has science been performed?” Many people would say no because science is the accumulation of knowledge. If the results of an experiment are not published, knowledge is not gained. The final...

In the absence of glucose E. coli can metabolize and grow on arabinose, a pentose sugar, using an inducible set of genes that are arranged in three groups on the chromosome (Fig shown). In one of these the araA, araB, andaraD genes encode enzymes for the metabolism of arabinose while the araC gene encodes a regulatory protein that binds adjacent to arabinose promoters and coordinates the expression of the genes in the arabinose operon. The other two groups of genes...
