Glycocalyx is a carbohydrate-enriched coating which covers the outside of many eukaryotic cells. On eukaryotic cell it acts as a factor used for recognition of the cell. All animal cells have a cell coat known as glycocalyx. Glycocalyx in animal cell is composed of oligosaccharides (glycans) of glycoproteins and glycolipids and a layer of secreted mucus particularly in the gastrointestinal, respiratory and urogenital tracts. It is also present in the vascular system mainly in endothelium cells.
