Do population growth models apply to humans the same way they apply to other species?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Yes, in fact humans are not unique and they are able alter their environment as long their population grows. According with Thomas Malthus, a population will always grow or decrease exponentially if the environmental conditions remains constant. However, in most of the cases, the consumption of environmental resources by one population can affect the growth of other one. We can compare us with beaver dams which alter the environment where they live in order to survive. The same happens with humans. Humans are able to increase their carrying capacity modifying their environment but impacting on other species.

Growth of a population can be represented by simple mathematical models. Write the equation for exponential population growth. Write the logistic equation for population growth. Explain in your own words the meaning of the additional term in the logistic equation. Populations may not grow exactly as predicted by the logistic equation. Discuss one reason for this.

A class of models for population growth rates in marine fisheries assumes that the harvest from fishing is proportional to the population size. One such fishery uses the following quadratic model, expressed in function notation. G(n) = 0.5n - 0.2n2. Here G is the growth rate of the population (in millions of tons of fish per year), and n is the population size (in millions of tons of fish). Calculate G (1.64)
