15. In which of the following metabolic conversions is ATP “generated” during glycolysis?

A) Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate ® Dihydroxyacetone phosphate + Glyceraldehyde-3- phosphate

B) 1,3-Bisphosphoglycerate ® 3-Phosphoglycerate

C) Glucose-6-phosphate ® Fructose-6-phosphate

D) 2-Phosphoglycerate ® 3-Phosphoglycerate

E) Glucose ® Glucose-6-phosphate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

B) 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate ® 3-phosphoglycerate

this is the 7th step in glycolysis. During this step 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate is converted to 3-phosphoglycerate by the enzyme phosphoglyceratekinase(PGK). This reaction involves the loss of phosphate group from starting materail. The phosphate is transferred to a molecule of ADP that yields our first molecule of ATP . Since we actually have 2 molecules of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate , we actually synthesize 2 molecules of ATP in this step.
