Assume that the total mass of extracted DNA from one strawberry could be accurately determine. How can the % of the strawberry’s mass that is DNA be estimated?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Procedure -

1. Take 10 g of strawberry tissue.

2. Make its suspension in 50 mL water.

3. Isolate DNA using specific DNA isolation protocol.

4. Once the DNA has been isolated, find out its absorbance at 260 nm.

5. Calculate the concentration of DNA using formula,

Concentration of DNA in mg per mL = 50 × dilution factor × absorbance at 260 nm.

6. This is the amount of DNA per mL.

7. We can calculate the amount of DNA in 50 mL now (suspension was made in 50 mL water).

8. The amount of DNA present in 50 mL water is equal to its amount in 10 g strawberry.

9. Amount of DNA in strawberry with respect to the mass of strawberry = amount of DNA in 10 g strawberry / weight of strawberry taken (10 g) × 100
