What is the relationship between a cell, CFU, and colony?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans:

The relationship between a cell, CFU and colony:

- Bacterial cells form colonies on agar medium.

- As the bacteria divide, the progeny bacteria remain adjacent to the original bacterium.

- As the number of progeny increases to about 106 cells, a visible cluster of bacteria apperas.

- This cluster is a population of bacterial cells called a bacterial colony.

- CFU means colony forming units.

- A colony forming unit is one bacterium or small group of bacteria that were able to replicate many times to form one single, visible colony.
