The drastic increase in the number of people diagnosed with autism, especially in developed countries in the last 20 years, can only be due to some new environmental exposure (e.g. a toxic chemical or a teratogen) in these developed countries. Discuss the merits of this statement? reference please
According to SAARC (Southwest Autism Research Resource Center) back in 1997, autism cases estimates were suggested to 1 in 2,500 children.
But later after year 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) started to track the Autism. Today, it is reported that one 1 in 68 children is identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The age of diagnosis is also drastically reduced, eralier it was about 4 years and 4 months but now it is about 3 years 10 months.
Althought there is a clear genetic contribution in ASD but a study, published in year 2014 in Translation Psyciatry, states about the relation of gene-environment interaction in ASD. one study shows that environmental factors can account 55% of the risk for developing ASD and 37% for genetic factors.
