what determines the sex of human offspring?
A. Timing
B. Temperature
C.The egg cell
D.The sperm cell
Answer-
D) The sperm cell determines the sex of human offspring.
In human, total number of chromosomes is 46 (in male 44 + XY and in female 44 + XX). Sperm produced by male are of two types: a) 22 + X, b) 22 + Y, whereas egg cell has 22 + X chromosomes.
The presence of Y chromosome triggers the embryonic gonads in the male pathway. Y chromosome has a critical gene that controls male sexual development, called the sex determining region Y (SRY) which triggers the undifferentiated gonadal tissue of the embryo to form testes. In the absence of Y chromosome, gonads of XX embryo retain their undifferentiated gonadal state that will proceed into ovaries.
