Describe in detail the lytic and lysogenic pathways of the bacteriophage virus. What are the advantages and disadvantages (for the virus) of each pathway?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

lytic pathway

1. the phage infects the cell/host

2.phage dna seperately occuring and circularize from the host dna.

3.phage dna replicates. as a result proteins are made and new phage particles are started to evolve.

4. the cell lyses and by bursting of the cell phages released to the adjacent cells.

this cycle will be active when the lysogenic cycle remain silent. it is used in warfares as a biological weapon. it killls susceptible competitors.

lysogenic pathway

1. the phage infectss the cell/ host

2.the pgahe cell is incorporating with the host dna genome.

3.when the cell divides the prophage dna is transferred to the offspring daughter dna.

4.when there is a stress condition phage can release from the genome and enter to the lytic cycle.

it helps to spread rapidly by cell divisions. it is more dangerous due to the incorporation of the host cell during infection

A virus with a capsid of a hollow cylinder surrounding nucleic acid bacteriophage not enough information is given to determine correct answer polyhedral helical complex In some viruses, capsomeres function as enzymes as well as structural supports. Of what advantage is this to the virus? the small size of the virus limits amount of virus specific genes so proteins are ONLY capsomeres conserve space on viral genome the small size of the virus limits amount of virus specific proteins so...

A bacteriophage is a virus that infects bacteria. In an experiment, if too few bacteriophages are used for the infection, it may be difficult to detect or measure the response being tested. Therefore, it is important to determine the multiplicity of infection (MOI). The MOI is the ratio between the number of bacteriophages and the number of bacteria (number of bacteriophages/ number of bacteria). 1) A 0.1 ml aliquot of a bacteriophage stock with a concentration of 4 x 109...
