Epithelial cells forms the covering of most of the organs and it acts as a barrier between body and environment. They can proliferate very fast and thus they are more prone to genetic error in replication which leads to genetic alterations. Frequent DNA replications and the ensuing cell divisions lead to acquiring and accumulating mutations. This can lead to activation of proto-oncogenes and loss of tumor suppressor genes, which are the primary reasons for cell transformation. Carcinogens and all other factors such as ultraviolet radiations which cause cancer first affect this covering cells.
