What part of the body would you expect to be affected by infection with an organisms that is positive for urea hydrolysis? Why is urea breakdown helpful for these pathogens?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Micro organism which causes hydrolysis of urea are present in either urinary tract ( where urea is stored in firm of urine or transported) or in gastro intestinal tract.

These microorganism contains urease enzyme which is a metallic enzyme use Ni as cofactor. These cause hydrolysis of urea in to ammonia and carbamate. As nitrogen is used as preferred energy sources in many of the microorganism. Thus help in their growth.

Along with this, generated Ammonia is believed to increase the pH of the environment . Which is supposed to to favour bacteria growth, and to injure the surrounding epithelial cells.
