What is the main function of the citric acid cycle?

What is the main function of the citric acid cycle?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Citric acid cycle or TCA or Krebs cycle is a metabolic pathway localized in the mitochondrial matrix.

The TCA cycle performs many functions.

It is the heart of the energetic metabolism of the cell, ie;almost all pathways of the energetic metabolism are connected to the TCA cycle. For example the ETC (electron transport chain), gluconeogenesis, transamination, deamination of amino acids or lipogenesis. It is quit obvious that there are both catabolic and anabolic pathways thus it is not easy to state which is dominant . This is the reason why it is described as amphibolic pathway

Citric acid cycle provides intermediates essential for cellular biosynthesis, thus also considered to be an anabolic process. The citric acid cycle intermediate succinyl-CoA can be used to synthesize porphyrins. In order to achieve the net synthesis of succinyl-CoA from pyruvate, what reactions and enzymes in the citric acid cycle and anaplerotic pathways are required.
