Are the uses of plants for food or non-food more similar across time and/or cultures? And Why?

I'm trying to brainstorm. This is an essay question that I just need some help on... I feel like the uses of plants for food and non-food are both similar across time and cultures?

Plants are central to our well being ,not only as food but also take part as medicinces,religions and cultures.The plants we use is similar across time and culture.Same plants are used in food over time but only difference is in the manner we cook and eat .It is even similar for non foods from plants they are also same but differ in manner of using.People also connect to their cultural or ethic group through similar foods .The ingredients , methods of preparation, preservation techniques varies but plants used remain similar.
