The neurons in the CNS show excitability. It is the property of the neuron to generate action potential.Neurons are the electrically excitable cells which receive, initiate, and conduct/transmit impulses. When a neuron is stimulated,an action potential is generated which swiftly travels along its plasma membrane.
This action potential travels down the axon to axon terminal which opens voltage gated calcium channels causing the calcium to diffuse into synaptic knobs. It triggers the release of neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles into the synapse which bind to the receptors present on the post synaptic membrane. These neurotransmitters may be excitatory or inhibitory. The signal is then initiated in the post synaptic neuron.
