. Which of the terms below can be used to fill in the blank in the following statement about cell signaling?

“Both acetylcholine and epithelial growth factor can activate intracellular signaling pathways that lead to the phosphorylation of protein kinase C but at different sites. When protein kinase C is doubly phosphorylated, it phosphorylates and activates SNAP, a protein effector that controls exocytosis. Therefore, protein kinase C functions to________ these two signals and provide a cellular response.”

  1. Distribute

  2. Amplify

  3. Dephosphorylate

  4. Integrate

  5. Regulate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans-4 integrate

Many intracellular signalling pathways are often linked together to produce a specific response. During this integration, one common cellular response is being produced. Now signalling form acetyl choline initiates phosphorylation of protein kinase C while epithelial growth factor also activates the same protein but at different sites. There integration can be understood by this because both of them are causing same cellular response.

Word Regulate would have mean to process the response separately but here they are trying to create a cellular response in integration.

So integrate can be used in to fill the statement about cell signalling.
