Answer #1

Answer : 25 mg

The half-life of a radioactive isotope is the time taken for half of the isotope to decay in a given sample . The half-life of carbon 14 isotope is 5,730 years.

Halft life of C-14 isotope is 5730 years, which means that a given quantity of C-14 isotope will decay to half the quantity in a period of 5730 years.

So, 100 mg of C-14 decays to ----------------------> 50 mg in 5730 years

50 mg of C-14 decays to -------------------> 25 mg in next 5730 years

So, at the end of 11460 yeras ( 2 half-lives), 25 mg of C-14 isotope will be left.

Carbon 14 (146C, mass of 14.003242u, half-life of 5730 years) can be used to date things that were once living. When a particular tree fell, a chunk of that tree would have had an activity of 15 decays/minute. Now, that chunk of the tree has a total of 1x10-12 g of carbon 14 in it. 44g of petrified wood was found in a petrified forest. A sample showed a carbon-14 activity of 100 decays/minutes. How long has the tree been dead (in years)? (The half-life of carbon-14 is 5730 years and freshly cut wood has a carbon-14 activity of 14.96 decays/min per gram.)

Carbon Dating: All living organisms contain two isotopes (types) of carbon; carbon-12 ( 12C) and carbon-14 (14C). Carbon-12 is stable, meaning that its atoms do not decay. Carbon-14 however, is radioactive or unstable, meaning that an atom of carbon-14 may decay. It does this by throwing off an electron and thus transforming itself into Nitrogen 14. The ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 is the same for all living organisims, about 1/10, 000. However, once an organisim dies the carbon-14 begins...
