Function of red bone marrow
Function of red bone marrow is the site of hematopoiesis. red bone marrow contains hematopoietic cells
In a child, all bone marrow is red, while an adult only has red bone marrow in his/her axial skeleton because the composition of bone marrow changes when the child become an adult. In a child the bone marrow is "red" (hematopoetic cells are dominant), whereas, in an adult it gradually changes to "yellow" marrow (fat cells are dominant). In a newborn baby, all the bones are hematopoietically very active. In adults, central skeleton and ends of long bones (femur and humerus) mainly contain red marrow.
