True or False??
An example of a symbiotic relationship is the infection of a bacterial cell by a bacteriophage.
True
False
False.
When a bacteriophage (bacteria eater) infects a bacteria, it takes the bacterial cellular machinery into it's own control and use it to synthesize it's genetic material and proteins. At the end of the infection process, the bacterial cell is lysed, and several new bacteriophages emerge. Thus, a bacteria gets killed due to this interaction. Symbiotic relationship is a long term relationship, in which one or both the organism benefits, but none of them gets killed. Therefore, bacteriophage infecting a bacteria cannot be an example of symbiotic relationship.
